Some 2002 MY X-TYPE vehicles with automatic transmissions may experience customer complaints of being unable to select a transmission range, or the message ‘GEARBOX FAULT’ flashing on the message center (or the powertrain malfunction lamp [MIL] illuminating) causing the vehicle to run in limp-home mode.

The automatic transmissions on specific 2002 Model Year X-TYPE vehicles within the above VIN range have the potential to contain a manufacturing flaw in the reverse clutch pack that may lead to transmission slippage and ultimately, if the corrective action detailed in this bulletin is not completed, transmission failure.
