Taken from the first page of the material: With the entrance of this type of aircraft into the training environment, it is incumbent on each Designated Pilot Examiners (DPE) to develop elements within their plans of action for practical tests to test the use of this equipment. All tests conducted in the Garmin 1000 or Avidyne equipped aircraft will be changed to a greater or lesser extent based on the type of test.

As with any change in equipment, it is imperative that each DPE become familiar with the equipment’s use in advance of conducting tests. It is clear to those who have had exposure to these systems that this will take a committed effort outside the test environment. The ideal venue for this is a flight training device which simulates the equipment. Unfortunately, this may not be available in every District. There are training programs given in many areas which would provide one of the best environments in which to learn. There are also inexpensive software programs for your personal computer, although not all computers are capable of running this software. Finding a trained pilot and getting some flight time in G1000 or Avidyne equipped aircraft is recommended if the other options are not practical.

Within each Practical Test Standard (PTS), there are a number of Areas of Operation and Tasks that will incorporate changes in future publications. In the interim, we need to adjust our Plans of Action to address the relevant items. Given the FAA’s overriding goal of standardization of testing, it is appropriate that DPEs in each District communicate with each other and the FSDO to achieve a consensus on testing procedures.
